The AGNULA IRC channel

AGNULA has an Internet Relay Chat channel where users and developers discuss and coordinate their effort.

The project is using a channel on the Freenode IRC network for real-time conversation between users and developers alike.

All you need to join this conversation is an IRC client program (and of course an internet connection). There are numerous IRC clients available. Check out irssi or bitchx for Linux. A popular proprietary client program for Microsoft Windows is Mirc. It is available without charge.

If you are new to IRC, please note that there is a detailed description of how to join the #agnula channel below.

#agnula is not a very big channel at the moment. It is a place where users and developers communicate alike. Since developers tend to be very busy people at times, please stay a while if nobody seems to answer your questions. Please give us some extra time to respond - we might not be looking at our IRC client windows just now.

Some people in the channel change their nickname to display if they are working busily ("nickname|w") or away from keyboard ("nickname|afk" or "nickn_afk"). Please note that this is considered very impolite in some of the big channels on the freenode network, like #debian and alike. But people in #agnula just love it.

If you want to learn more about IRC usage and the Freenode network, visit the Freenode website.

How to chat in the #agnula channel using irssi

It is very easy to install the text-based irssi IRC client on a DeMuDi system. Just type

apt-get update && apt-get install irssi-text
as root to install it.

To connect to the Freenode network type

irssi -c irc.freenode.net -n yournick
to launch the program. The -c option will connect you to the specified server. Use the -n option to select a nickname of your choice. You can change it later using the /nick command.

Do not connect to an IRC network as root! Always use IRC as a normal user.

Once you are connected to the server, it will display a "Message of the Day", a verbose welcome message. Now you can join the #agnula channel, type

/join #agnula
to do so.

You can /join as many channels as you want. Press <ctrl>-<p> and <ctrl>-<n> to change which channel you want to see displayed. The topic line of the channel is displayed at the top of the client window. To display the whole topic line of the #agnula channel, type

/list #agnula

The topic line will be displayed in the status buffer along other information about the channel. Use <ctrl>-<p> or <ctrl>-<n> to switch to the status buffer.

To leave a channel, type

/part

To leave all channels, disconnect and exit the client program, type
/exit

You can message people privately using the /msg command. Type
/msg peter Hi
to say "Hi" just to the user with the nickname "peter". It is just as if you would open a channel with just peter and yourself. The /unquery command ends the private conversation. Please note that it is considered impolite to /msg people without their consent. IRC is a very open and public medium. Use it to speak up to the community, not to individuals only.

To learn more about the irssi IRC client, read its manual or documentation on the net.
